Mesolithic Age

The Mesolithic age, also called the Middle Stone Age, was an ancient cultural period that happened between the Paleolithic (also called the Old Stone Age) and the Neolithic (also called the New Stone Age) with its chipped stone tools and polished stone tools, respectively. The Mesolithic Age, which was the second part of the Stone Age, was also called the Middle Stone Age. It lasted from 9,000 B.C. to 4,000 B.C. in India.

This time period is marked by the appearance of Microliths, which are small stone tools with blades that were made to be put together on a shaft to make a serrated edge. Some Mesolithic assemblages also had polished stone, which was another new thing.

Between the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic Age, there was a time called the Mesolithic Age. The Mesolithic is most often used to describe archaeological finds from the Eastern Hemisphere. It is similar to the Archaic culture of the Western Hemisphere in many ways. In the Mesolithic, there were more new ideas and different kinds of things made than in the Paleolithic.

People in this time period hunted, fished, and gathered food to eat. Later, they also learned how to keep animals as pets. Even though Mesolithic people were similar to Paleolithic people in terms of culture and technology, they adapted to their environments in different ways. The Mesolithic hunter was more efficient than the Paleolithic hunter and could get food from a wider range of animals and plants.

Mesolithic hunters and fishers were probably taken in by Neolithic farmers, and some Neolithic communities seem to have been made up entirely of Mesolithic people who used Neolithic tools (these are sometimes called Secondary Neolithic).

Because the Mesolithic is made up of many different kinds of material culture, its dates vary from place to place. In northwestern Europe, for example, the Mesolithic began around 8000 BCE, after the end of the Pleistocene Epoch (which lasted from about 2,600,000 to 11,700 years ago) and ended around 2700 BCE. Some of the dates for the Mesolithic are different in other places.

Things you should know about the Mesolithic Age

It happened in India from about 9,000 B.C. to 4,000 B.C. Between the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic Age, this time period was a bridge.

Things about the Mesolithic Age

Between the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic Age, there was a time called the Mesolithic Age. It has features from both the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. During this time, people hunted, fished, and gathered food to eat. Later on, they also learned how to keep animals as pets.

Microliths were the tools that people of this time used. The length of a microlith can be anywhere from 1 cm to 8 cm. The principal Mesolithic tools include the backed blade, core, point, triangle, lunate, and trapeze. Some tools from the past, like the scraper, burin, and choppers, are still used.

Painting was a popular art form in this time period. They painted pictures of birds, animals, and people.

About 10,000 years ago, the climate started to get warmer again. When it got cold, many of the big animals moved to the north. Some animals went extinct, like the mammoth, the elk, the woolly rhino, and the bison. Over time, forests grew all over the Netherlands, which were full of animals and plants. The Middle Stone Age started when these changes happened. Archeon’s prehistory starts with this time period.
